Job summary

We have the opportunity for an enthusiastic nurse to join the SAFE team which is part of the Health Advising team providing a sexual health/ prevention service to general clinic and commercial sex workers. The overarching aim of the SAFE service is to reduce any harm associated with sex, and to empower service users to make positive lifestyle choices.

Previous experience working in a sexual health setting is desirable but not essential as full training will be given.

You will be required to work flexibly to meet the needs of the service and work within the Umbrella sites throughout Birmingham & Solihull. The applicant should be able to demonstrate a keen interest in sexual health.

Umbrella delivers a wide range of sexual health services across Birmingham and Solihull providing sexually transmitted infection testing/treatment and contraception. Umbrella is a uniquely comprehensive partnership of local service providers, including community pharmacists, general practitioners, third sector and other partners, NHS Trusts and Birmingham City Council Services.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

An exciting opportunity to join the SAFE team at Umbrella Sexual Health. We are a looking for a motivated conscientious individual who can communicate effectively with patients and staff members.

The post will involve clinical assessments, testing for STI’s and delivering a contraception service this work can be within a clinical setting and also outreach including street night outreach, evening shifts and weekends. You will be expected to travel across Birmingham and Solihull and therefore a full driving licence is essential for the SAFE position.

Sexual Health experience is desirable but not essential as full training will be given, this will be at a Band 5 until training has been completed.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Adult Nurse on the NMC Register.
  • Evidence and ability to revalidate as required by the NMC.
  • Has a genuine interest in sexual health and the post within SAFE and can demonstrate this both at time of application and at interview.

Desirable

  • Post registration training / qualification in sexual health GUM / DFRSH or equivalent.
  • Recognised STIF qualification and DFRSH qualification or willing to undertake training.

Experience

Essential

  • Previous / recent experience or working in an acute secondary NHS care setting (can include student placements within the last 12 months).
  • Evidence of achievements and career development in current post and of ongoing professional development/ competence.
  • Experience of working on own and in a team in a health care environment delegating to others within a team / providing supervision to others.
  • Willingness to become a Mentor to or meets Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirements for mentorship.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of current issues regarding sexual health, GUM and contraception.
  • Willingness to undertake further training relevant to the post.

Experience of working in a sexual health service.
