Are you an enthusiastic talented International Psychiatrist looking to progress your career in the UK?

We have an exciting opportunity for enthusiastic, committed, talented and experienced International Psychiatrists to gain experience towards specialist Consultant registration via the Portfolio route in General Adult Psychiatry and Older Adult Psychiatry in the UK.

NHS Forth Valley: Where exceptional Psychiatrists can flourish and really feel at home

In NHS Forth Valley we know the radical and transformational difference Psychiatrists make to the lives of their patients. This is why we have developed, and will always strive to maintain a system that allows them to do this work. In NHS Forth Valley we passionately believe in joined-up, holistic care across the whole patient journey. We have resisted the fragmentation of our services. Our world class trauma psychotherapy service informs everything we do, allowing our Psychiatrists to deliver genuine, trauma informed care.

We are in an exciting place with regards to Psychiatry in Forth Valley. Our goal is to be able to evidence we have the best mental health services in Scotland. We have recruited extensively in recent years and now have a dynamic team to help us achieve this goal. We are in a position to be able to focus on developing high quality services going forward. Our inpatient General Adult Psychiatry wards were awarded accreditation status from the Royal College of Psychiatrists in December 2022 for providing high quality care (ours are 2 of only 4 wards in Scotland to currently hold this status). Our goal is that all of our services will achieve similar recognition for providing excellent care over the next 5 years. The post holder would be a key part of this.

We would be delighted to support the post holder to work towards qualifying as a trained Consultant via the Portfolio route. Sessional time would be allocated for this. We have a track record of supporting our substantive Speciality Doctors through this process, and we are setting up a Portfolio fellowship programme. Local senior Psychiatrists have been trained as Portfolio evaluators.

We are already established as a leading centre for training and developing Psychiatrists. Our local teaching and training programmes have been nationally recognised and we are keen to expand them further. We are home to the Scottish Centre for Clinical Simulation and Human Factors, one of the most advanced training facilities of its kind, where medical staff are able to hone their skills using computerised mannequins. Through this centre we have developed the award winning PSYCHSIM programme. This trains our staff in managing emergency situations that arise on Psychiatry wards.

Many of our existing Consultant Psychiatrists have a national profile in Medical Education and so new members of our team would have immediate links to regional and national teaching opportunities.

You can look forward to a warm welcome and strong support from colleagues. Our hospital is situated in the heart of Scotland, nestled against the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, and close to vibrant towns that are richly endowed with excellent cultural and sporting facilities, offering good transport links to Edinburgh and Glasgow.

The Portfolio programme is a route to work towards gaining entry on to the Specialist Register. It is a competency-based programme that enables you to provide a portfolio of evidence of training, qualifications and experience, meeting the requirements of the General Adult Psychiatry or Older Adult Psychiatry CCT curriculum. Successful completion of the Portfolio process results in entry onto the Specialist Register which is a mandatory requirement to work as a substantive Consultant in the NHS.

Our 3 year programme is specially designed to provide International Psychiatrists with all the necessary support including visa sponsorship, relocation support and bespoke mentoring and experience to suit individual portfolio needs to achieve Portfolio in General Adult Psychiatry and Older Adult Psychiatry.

To be eligible for the programme, you must have full registration with the General Medical Council, at least 4 years experience of working in Psychiatry with a formal qualification like M.D.(Psychiatry) or other Postgraduate qualifications recognised in your country which were gained after a period of training and qualifying examinations. Ideally candidates will have passed all of the MRCPsych examinations. They must have sufficient experience be recognised as an Approved Medical Practitioner (AMP) with regard to the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003. Candidates must also have been engaged in clinical practice in Psychiatry over the last 12 months and meet the GMC’s Evidence of knowledge of English requirements. Candidates previously refused the GMC registration through alternative routes including PLAB will not be ordinarily considered for the programme.
